friday, friday, friday!

Becky, Pep, and Audrey came into town (YAY). So we set up a monitor and enjoyed drinks in the Quad and on the roof.

the week in review...

Eva has found a new spot that she insists on being in now that the semester has started and Beka is at her computer more...
This week Beka,

— jumped and screamed in the quad at 8 am with 40+ other people
— passed the spanish language exam
— meditated with Tibetian Monks
— played with play doh (in a class)
— read a reading for class that was like a VH1 documentary
— played with an adorable almost 2 year old
— got a voluptuous mole lifeguard with a surf board in a kinder egg...

(whatchya gonna do with all that junk, all that junk inside that trunk?)
This week Doug,

— learned that his NASA project was unofficially, officially greenlit
— fell down a flight of stairs, shattering glass, but living to tell the tale
— orchestrated a gathering of Florida friends
— thought of new robot designs
— read most of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence
— held the fantasy football record of 1 in 1
— got a breakdancing cricket in a kinder egg

saturday shopping

We went shopping, finding first a street fair close by... Doug found the Ottoman Empire.
Then we went to the SoHo Levi's store... where Beka found 2 pairs of jeans cheap...
We traveled around to various Levi's Stores, Thrift stores, H&Ms etc across Manhattan before venturing to Brooklyn for 3 more thrifting ventures...

Beka was a bit more successful in finding things than Doug. :(

But we'll be having return adventures...
This was of course the kitties favorite part...

morningbell

We went with friends to dinner...
And then the show... they came back!

They also brought Doug on stage for a theremin rawkout...

Beka didn't think to turn the video until the end... and by then, they were finished...

And Blogger doesn't like to host these videos... so, it's still back to YouTube...

photo booth

Doug and Beka played with Photo Booth on the iMac...

Everyone does and then posts the pictures somewhere after getting a Mac or playing with one... It's like a rite of passage for Mac owners.

Pushkin however wanted nothing to do with it.

Lick the swirl!

We tried to make Eva a pirate kittie... no such luck...

Double the pleasure,
double the fun,
doublemint gum?

lapping up the sun

And Doug's water...

She often sticks her paw in it too.
Beka had to warn Doug not to drink the water he may have left from a previous night.

robot robot...

For those keeping tabs... new deadline is tomorrow...

Beka: Is that safe to be doing in here? Making sparks and all?
Doug: Of course...

school's in...

First Day of School for Beka...
Kinda...
Her only class got canceled...

But this is the gist of the impending semester... not including the possibility of adding an education course (only meets three times a semester), the possibility of dropping Spanish, and teaching on Sundays.

Inherent to the schedule: long weekends to get things done :)

Eva is of course ready to help Beka study...

labor day

We went to the beach for our day off from the lab and Orientation. The pigeons reminded us we weren't that far from the city...

And it was more like some glorified dirt and a reason for too many men to wear speedos... We'll be looking for better venues by next season...

beer tasting

We found a grocery store with a really good selection and decent prices on single bottles. So we each chose three and had a 2 day beer tasting...

First up, Rogue Mocha Porter.
Dark — like burnt black coffee, missing the creaminess of Guinness, not terribly bitter, but not spectacular overall.

Doug's pick: Old Peculiar

Another dark beer — not as bitter, with coffee undertones, sweet, and overall tasty.

Lagunitas Sirius

This got worse as we drank it. Very hoppy, very bitter, very bad.

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale

Beka wanted to try a Smuttynose brew that she might like better than the IPA and Pumpkin Ale (Check back later for when we have compiled a tasting of pumpkin ales.)

Much more pleasurable. Light in taste, easy to drink, hint of acidity, but a clean finish.

We sipped on the Sierra Nevada Summerfest as we finished our dinner of vegetable lo mein.

After questioning what bottom-fermenting meant... Beka wanted to add Lemon to it (surprisingly), Doug thought it was clean, but uneventful summer beer.

Beka's final pick: Red Bach

Delightfully red in color, very very sweet, good for the springtime, reminded us of Cheerwine...
Cheerbeer, perhaps?

new post

Beka bought the kitties a new scratching post today...

Pushkin apparently liked the lid from it more...

The video is really so you can hear the horrid noise he made as he licked it.

At least we have one reasonably smart cat.

stuff on my Doug

It's like stuff on my cat, in reverse...

always fun

Kinder Eggs!

Beka got a jellyfish that wears a wig and baseball hat and Doug got a Genie...

We're planning on wishing for more genies since we can't wish for more wishes.

saturday morning fun!

We spent a lovely Saturday morning with Katy and Jesse getting yummy breakfast, some shopping done, and then having delectable cupcakes at Babycakes.

This is the individual cupcake Iron Maiden... for those who don't want to carry the whole cupcake suitcase...
